National Research Council (CNR) is a government research organisation (staff of about 7000),
which is involved in activities enveloping most disciplinary sectors (physics, chemistry, medicine,
agriculture, etc.), in co-operation with universities and industries, one of its tasks being the
transfer of innovations to production and services. Its main administrative headquarters are in
Rome. Research activity is carried out in Institutes, which are located throughout Italy. The
Institute for Research on Electromagnetic Waves (IFAC) in Florence (staff of about 100, half of
whom are researchers) has a broad range of activities in pure physics (solid state, cosmology,
optics) and applied physics (electromagnetic wave propagation, communications, integrated optics,
optical fibres, remote sensing, etc.). The Department on Information Theory and Processing is
involved in research on the theory and applications of signal and image processing and information
technology (communications, biomedicine, non-destructive tests, user interface and aids for disabled
persons).
